Protected Culture on the Farm

Chris Mullins currently serves as Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist for Greenhouse and Specialty Crops at Virginia State University with responsibility for working on the statewide extension program in the area of protected culture of horticulture crops. His current areas of research and extension work include: hydroponics, greenhouse management, vegetable production, irrigation, high tunnel crop production and aquaponics. Chris is featured monthly on the TV show Real Virginia on the gardening segment ”From the Ground Up“.

Samantha Smith–Herndon

Using Drones on the Farm

Samantha Smith-Herndon is a part 107 drone pilot and leads the Precision Agriculture program at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. With a background in horticulture sciences and greenhouse production, she helped launch the Precision Agriculture research program at IALR in 2017. In 2017 alone, Samantha flew 120 missions over targeted farms in Southern Virginia. A Danville transplant she is devoted to playing an integral part in the continued economic development of the Southside Virginia Region.
