What's Up at the Virginia Tech
Horticulture Gardens
Lots of changes have been occurring
at the Horticulture Gardens. For example, the boxwood hedge
separating the Gardens from the side road was removed and a "no
less than spectacular" 100'
herbaceous
perennial border was installed. The fastigiate white pines were
taken out and that area is now a dwarf conifer garden. The water
garden (installed in '94) was completely disassembled and made
larger and more dramatic by a special water garden class. The
annual bed area was redesigned and we have had knock-out displays
of flowers and foliage including a bed designated as the Kitchen
Garden.
The Master Plan for Phase II of the
Hort Gardens (an additional four acres that will be added to
the Gardens as funding becomes available) is nearly complete.
We had 14 weddings at the Gardens this past spring & summer.
These are just some of the changes. So, I invite you to visit
the Hort Gardens and check out all the changes on your next trip
to Blacksburg.

Phase II of the Horticulture Gardens
There has been a lot of interest in
Phase II of the Horticulture Gardens. Below is the Master Plan
of the entire site along with a section drawing of the proposed
Stream Garden prepared by Rodney Robinson, Landscape Architects.
