Name: Barbara Gustafason
Unit: James City County/Williamsburg
Term: Summer 2005

How did you first find your interest in gardening?
"I found it as therapy. My husband died when my kids were still in middle school, so I had to go back to work and go to school, and do a number of different things all at the same time, and I needed something to unwind. And so I got more into gardening. I would always garden, but that's what got me deeply into it."

What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Master Gardener?
"I think being the president of the group because it's such a dynamic, diverse group of people to be able to work with them and stand in front of them and not end up having them lead me all the time."

What type of projects have you invested most of your time in?
"Working with others, helping others. finding ways to add value to your life by doing different things."

What year did you graduate from the Master Gardener training class?
"99."

What is your favorite aspect of the Master Gardener program?
"The fact that you can do the various projects that are very, very different from one another and learning- always learning- different things. And also, the kinds of people that you meet in Master Gardeners are generally people that care about the environment. They care about other people and their feelings. They're just a very creative bunch."

In what area of gardening would you say you're most experienced in?
"I've got an awful lot to learn in every aspect in gardening. But I guess I'd say herbs and container gardening."

What advice would you give to new gardeners?
"To realize that it is a constant learning experience that you never are an authority, simply. There's always more to learn and there's always more being developed to learn.
