When did you first find out you were interested in gardening?
"When I was 3 years old...I was at home with my mother and she gave me 3 square feet of garden space. In this space I planted radishes, lettuce, and tomatoes."
What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Master Gardener?
"Doing things as a big group; for example, we worked on a project in which we took an old garden and turned it into a designated quiet area (at Ivy Creek Natural Area)."
What type of projects have you invested most of your time in?
"Building birdhouses for almost extinct bluebirds at county parks. This project was approved as an Master Gardener project. We have many birdhouses in a county park; one person checks a group of boxes every two weeks."
What year did you graduate from the Master Gardener training class?
"1990."
What is your favorite aspect of the Master Gardener program?
"Associating with people interested in different aspects of plants since everybody has their own bit of knowledge in different areas."
In what area of gardening would you say you're most experienced in?
"Flowering plants...also vegetables like radishes and tomatoes. With the tomatoes I like to do a mixture of cherry and plum."
What advice would you give to new gardeners?
"Talk to you local agent. Remember that you keep learning...your knowledge will grown when you encounter different plant diseases."
Anything else you would like to add?
"The Master Gardener program is a great way to interact with people who enjoy gardens; it is a nice thing to be doing outside of one’s normal routine."
