SHAWSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GARDEN PROJECT
Laurie W. DeMarco

The goal of the Shawsville Elementary School Service Learning Project was introduce the benefits of using school gardening as an interdisciplinary, teaching method to the participating teachers. Teachers were presented with the idea of using school gardening as a method to teach a variety of subject areas that extend beyond the subject of "science." The fourth grade constructed colonial and Native American villages and then grew the surrounding landscape by providing trees (beans), shrubs (peas), fields (grass), flowers (marigolds), and crops (corn). The second and third grade explored the living soil and the life cycle of an invertebrate through the process of vermi-composting. The kindergarten students investigated their five senses through the planting, growing, and study of herbs. As the teachers participate in these projects it is hoped that they will continue using the process of gardening as a method to augment and integrate their curriculum.
