Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center

My service-learning program at Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center performed application of volunteering service through hands-on horticultural activities in communities and schools. The participants in VT adult day care center are the elderly and impaired adults. Currently they are 12 participants. Alison Comar, the activity director at VT adult day care center who is very eager to learn more about horticulture and I performed the horticultural activities. Because the participants are very helpless, quiet, and passive, I got to think that they need motivation for their will for life. We agreed that the horticultural work of face to face is required for the participants. We had strong anticipation for horticultural activity for them.

So far we performed the horticultural activities 5 times. The first horticultural activity, making dish garden was to plant wandering jew, African violet, ivy, etc on the small aluminum plate. The second activity was sowing vegetable and flower seeds in the small pots. This work was helpful for them to improve physical motor skill. The third work, planting the herbs such as peppermint, parsley, oregano, chives, and holly hocks on the raised beds in outdoor garden at VT adult day care center was performed. The activity gave the participants the sensory stimulation. On the forth activity the participants removed dead leaves and put some vitamins in the plants. On the fifth activity they performed transplanting the pansies into the ground beds.

I got recognized the role of horticulture and the plant in improvement of physical and psychological aspects for the impaired individuals.
