Gardening is such a mixture of mistakes and successes, and I often think the mistakes are the most important ~ Barbara Dodge Borland

You do not need to know everything about horticulture in order to have a successful garden experience with youth. Learning together along the way is part of the fun! There are plenty of resources available to you both locally and online to help you get started.

An important local resource for you is the Cooperative Extension Service. Cooperative Extension can be found in states across the country. Each state has its own Extension Service which serves as a link between land grant universities (in Virginia, Virginia Cooperative Extension is linked to Virginia Tech and Virginia State University) and the citizens of the state. The link is through local unit offices that have staff and volunteers who conduct research-based educational programs and have the knowledge to answer agriculture related questions. Many Extension units have volunteers called Master Gardeners that are specially trained to provide Environmental Horticulture education. Click here to find out how to contact your local Virginia Cooperative Extension Office.

There are also numerous horticulture books, magazines and tv shows that can guide you in your gardening adventure. As the internet has expanded, the number of garden related websites has also exploded.

The following are links to more horticulture and gardening information. The placement on this page does not imply support for all of the the information at each link. As with any subject, it is important to evaluate each site to determine the value of the information provided. Click here for website evaluation tips.
